Skiing is a winter tradition that has been around for at least 5,000 years. In the middle ages, Scandanavian countries utilized skis to make hunting, combat, and farming easier during the winter months. More recently, skis were used by the Swedish Army during training in the 1700s. This led to improvements in ski design during the mid-1800s. By the late 1800s there were several ski manufacturers commercially producing skis in both the U.S. and in Europe. This commercial production of technologically advanced skis combined with railways that enabled city dwellers to access ski areas, led to skiing becoming a popular recreational activity. This burgeoning sport really took off in the 1930s when the first chair lift was installed in Sun Valley, Idaho. Improvements to both skis and ski resorts continue to this day. Now, with over 500 ski resorts in the U.S. and Canada, there are plenty of places to venture out on skis.
